Shi’ism and Geopolitics

In particular, it surveys Shi’a thought and political mobilization--including armed movements--in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and the Persian Gulf with the aim of understanding their roots, interconnectedness, and diverse transnational contexts. From the Iranian revolution of 1979 to Lebanon’s Hezbollah to the establishment of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Iraq, Shi’a movements have emerged from a seeming vacuum encompassing a critical geopolitical space in the Asian heartland and the Persianate world. This geography stretches from Central Asia to the shores of the eastern Mediterranean and the Arabian Peninsula, and from the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf to the Strait of Bab al-Mandab connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Iran’s foreign policy in the region and its network of allies, inclusive of the Axis of Resistance, is a significant topic of study given its outsized role and influence in regional geopolitics. This is all the more salient given the ongoing nuclear standoff between Iran and the United States and the US sanctions regime against Iran and its allies. Larger phenomena driven by Shi’a movements also include the mobilization of tens of millions of individuals annually across pilgrimage networks in the region, particularly to the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein in Karbala, and the establishment of extensive interconnected Shi’a social welfare and cultural organizations throughout the Middle East. Increasingly, the internal and regional dynamics of Shi’a actors are an important component of global geopolitics and our research examines the multifaceted and complex ways these mass social movements are evolving on the world stage.
